A number of venues across the borough will play host to 16 theatrical productions which were chosen for their originality, innovation and relevance. This assorted treasure trove of plays and dance dramas maintains some traditional genres and titles but has universal themes and a contemporary twist in a bid to overcome language barriers and reach new audiences.

Displacement and identity, the difference between genders and generations with some temporal shifts between ‘then and now’, young people providing colour and lighthearted relief through a Tagore interpretation, but also the harrowing tale of Hiroshima, recurring themes such as the dangers of radicalisation, and an exploration through 2 plays of whether cost cutting of human life takes priority with both the NHS and multi-national corporations.

Bribery, selfishness, hypocrisy and prejudice are showcased both on the streets of East London, Birmingham and in the rural homeland of Bangladesh from a bygone era. Asian stereotypes, are challenged in positive ways and the impact of social media, the 1971 war and childhood marriage are all brought to the fore.

The main programme of performances is to be supplemented by a fringe programme of talks, walks and exhibitions. See details here – www.towerhamletsarts.org.uk

Abstract and immediate, whimsical and topical, this promises buoyant and thought provoking season.
